LIFE TRANSITIONS
Embrace Life’s Challenges
Life throws many surprises and changes at us. These can be planned or unplanned, joyful or sad, easy or challenging, temporary or permanent. Yet all of them can be disconcerting and all of them can leave us struggling to move forward. I can help you to identify your strengths, work towards acceptance, and to discover approaches that work for you to handle the changes in your life. I encourage you to contact me and we can talk about the next step.
LGBTQIA+
Live Confidently and Authentically
Members of the LGBTQIA+ community often face different challenges in life than folks who are in the heteronormative community. Blatant discrimination as well as covert microagressions can be a daily occurrence. I can work with you to identify systems and personal feelings that may be contributing to feelings of isolation. Family beliefs, their feelings, and their actions can also be sources of distress. Relationships and parenting that are normally private, can become part of larger public discussions in our society. All of these situations can add to the everyday stress of living. I would welcome the chance to talk with you about moving forward.
ABOUT ME
Counseling Professional: MA, LPC
Hello! My name is Mel. I’m a queer, trans therapist and my pronouns are they/them. I have been through a lot of changes throughout my life and they continue to happen! Relationships, family, identity, and careers are just a few. I know what it’s like to feel overwhelmed, stuck, and not understand what’s happening to you.
I recognize that as a white, educated, middle class, older person I have experienced the world in a certain way. I will work to understand your perspective, your world, and to acknowledge the unique challenges that you face. I will bring a feminist, systemic perspective framework along with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) into our work. The focus will be to find your path to moving forward.
I work with individuals over the age of 18. I tend to work in a nondirective fashion because I feel that’s the best way for you to understand yourself. Within our sessions, we’ll first work to ease some of the symptoms that are disrupting your life the most. I often bring in the ideas of automatic thoughts and beliefs as well as dig deeper into the parts of our lives that have created these thoughts and beliefs. Through changes in my own life, I have become aware of the internalized beliefs and societal expectations that can affect our abilities to know who we are and to live authentically and confidently.
